The Paris Catacombs

On Tuesday we thought we would go on a bike trip and train ride to Versailles, but instead, since all the spots were taken, we decided to go to the catacombs. If you didn’t know already, the catacombs are a large series of underground tunnels filled with skeletons. Different sections are dedicated to different graveyards. This is because during the French Revolution, so many people were killed that the graveyards were getting too full, so they got an idea. They would just turn the old limestone quarry into a giant underground grave. So they made it a little bigger, and then they put the skeletons in. Many Kings were said to have wild parties in there.
The catacombs are roughly the size of Paris, but only a mile of them is open to the public. To some people it’s surprising how small the section you’re allowed to see is, but I’m surprised you’re even allowed in. The reason is because it’s so easy to get lost, and if you get lost, then there’s no coming back. There is in fact, a team of explorers that explore the catacombs every year. They go into the restricted section and find new things.
Waiting in line was not very fun. We had to wait for 2 1/2 hours. For a while I thought that it would be all scary, but it turned out that it had more of a relaxing feeling.

Thank you for reading our blog!☺️
